The 9th ranked Creighton men’s soccer team wanted to see how they ranked with the best team in college soccer and while they lost 1-0 to Akron, the #1 ranked team, they feel they are close to competing with the top teams in the nation, but haven’t been able to get over the hump yet. The loss snapped Creighton’s 22 match unbeaten streak in regular season road matches.
Akron was not only the top rated team, but the top scoring team in the coutnry. The win was Akron’s 23rd straight home win, extending their home unebeaten streak to 34 matches. Akron, the 2009 NCAA runner-up, improved to 14-0-1 on the season. Creighton fell to 11-3-0 while being shutout for the first time this season.
The loss drops Creighton to 0-4-0 all-time against the No. 1-ranked team in the coaches poll.
Creighton’s last road loss in the regular-season came at Bradley on Oct. 28, 2006. The Bluejays had gone 15-0-7 in regular-season away matches since that defeat.
The Bluejays will now return home to wrap up the regular-season with three straight home contests inside Missouri Valley Conference play.
