A good report card for the troubled Beatrice State Developmental Center from a monitoring legislative committee. Chair Senator Steve Lathrop indicates to us that the state facility is utilizing a new strategy.
“The strategies that they are employing now is to divide the cottages into five different housing units so there will be clusters of housing units.”
Senator Lathrop says that they learned during Wednesday’s visit that this approach should permit a more community type setting rather then a big institution. Lathrop says that the center will try soon to regain Medicaid certification in five segments. Allegations of abuse and neglect have dogged the center. The state last year lost its appeal to regain Medicaid certification that would bring $29 million in annual federal funding.
