Iowa State answered Rex Burkhead’s touchdown in overtime with a nine yard touchdown pass, but Cyclones coach Paul Rhodes called for a fake extra point and the holder, Daniel Kuehl’s pass was intercepted by Alex Haag at the goal line preserving a 31-30 win for the Huskers.
Nebraska led 24-10 in the fourth quarter, but after a 12 play, 75 yard TD drive by Iowa State and then another three play, 14 yard TD drive that came after Niles Paul fumbled the ensuing kickoff, the Cyclones tied the game.
Iowa State QB Austen Arnaud played with a bad ankle most of the game, after he got tangled up in a tackle in the first half, but finished 21 of 32 for 202 yards with three TDs. However, he was also picked off twice including Austin Cassidy’s 29 yard pick six apart of a 17 point third quarter for NU that turned a 10-7 deficit into a 14 point lead.
Cody Green, who had his bell rung on a hit in the second quarter, got the start ahead of Taylor Martinez who is still bothered by a sore ankle. He was 7 for 12 for 79 yards. Once again the NU running game was solid, picking up 235 yards on the ground. Rex Burkhead had 22 carries for 129 yards including 25 in the overtime session when he put NU up on two runs. Roy Helu finished with 98 yards on 20 carries.
Kyler Reed caught three of Green’s passes for 52 yards.
