The Creighton women’s soccer team, regular-season and tournament champions of the Missouri Valley Conference, will head to Minnesota on Friday, November 12, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Proposed start time is 6 p.m., following the opening match of North Dakota State and Texas A&M.
Creighton (15-3-2), winners of 13 of its last 14 matches, earned its NCAA Tournament bid with a 2-1 overtime victory over Missouri State on Sunday. This will be the program’s fifth appearance, as the Bluejays also reached the NCAA Tournament in 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2007.
Sophomore Brittney Neumann was named MVC Player of the Year after leading the league with nine goals, while junior Andrea Zuniga led the league with 25 points and nine assists. Junior Erin Gunther, who scored the game-winning goal in the MVC title game, tied for the Valley lead with four game-winning goals on the season. In goal, junior Alicia Montgomery has allowed just nine goals in 15 matches played and tops the MVC with a 0.66 goals against average.
Meanwhile, a 13-7-2 record and third place finish in the Big 12 was not enough for the Husker women’s soccer team to get an at-large bid for the NCAA field of 64. Most years that’s not even an issue, a tough break for NU. This is the second year in a row that a loss to Oklahoma State in the Big 12 tournament eventually cost the Huskers a shot at post-season play.
