Greg McDermott became the first Creighton coach since 1921 to start his career 3-0 as his Bluejays picked up a 63-58 win over Louisiana on Wednesday night. Kenny Lawson Jr. had 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead Creighton in the win.
Creighton led 34-28 at the half behind seven points from Antoine Young and Lawson. UL was paced by 12 points and seven rebounds from Randell Daigle, who drained 4-of-7 treys in the first half.
The Jays quickly pushed their lead to 39-28 just three minutes into the second half, scoring the first five points after intermission on a tip-in by Doug McDermott and a three-pointer from Lawson. The Jays would claim their largest lead of the evening at 52-39 with 9:22 left on a trey by Darryl Ashford, but UL continued its comeback.
Lawson had season-bests of 15 points and 11 rebounds for his eighth career double-double. Joining him in double-figures was reigning MVC Player of the Week Young (13 points) and reigning MVC Newcomer of the Week Doug McDermott (12 points). Kaleb Korver tied a career-best with seven rebounds while logging a career-high 37 minutes.
Creighton returns on Sunday with a 1:05 pm game against Iowa State (3-0). The neutral-site contest will take place at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa.
