Carli Tritz has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week after her performances against a pair of nationally-ranked opponents last week. The freshman averaged 12.5 points per game against Nebraska and Notre Dame, despite being slowed by a sprained ankle.
Tritz opened the week with a career-high 21 points against Nebraska (ranked 22nd in the coaches poll) on Wednesday night. The rookie made 8-of-14 shots from the field, including 4-of-6 three-pointers to lead all scorers in the in-state rivalry. The Sioux City, Iowa, native had made 1-of-5 three-pointers in her first six games before finding her long range shooting touch against the Huskers. She also added two steals, a block and an assist against NU, playing 32 minutes, including the final 12 minutes on a sprained right ankle.
Creighton men’s basketball senior Kenny Lawson Jr. has been named the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. The Oceanside, Calif., native earns the honor for the first time after posting career-highs with 30 points and 18 rebounds on Saturday against Saint Joseph’s in Creighton’s lone game of the week.
Lawson, the Preseason MVC Player of the Year, made 11-of-17 shots from the floor, 7-of-8 free throws, had a season-best three blocked shots and also had two assists in Creighton’s 82-75 win over the Hawks.
Lawson had 16 points and seven rebounds in the first half, including nine points during a 20-4 run after Creighton had fallen behind by 12 points. He had a double-double in the second half alone with 14 points and 11 rebounds, including 10 points during a four-minute stretch late in the second half.
Lawson’s 30 points were the most by a Bluejay since November of 2008 and his 18 rebounds were the most by a Bluejay since 1989.
