The year ended on an unhappy note for the UNO Mavericks who lost to Quinnipiac, 3-2 on Friday afternoon at the TD Bank Sports Center. The Mavericks were swept in the two-game non-conference series after losing on Thursday night, 4-3. With the loss, the Mavs are now 12-7-1 overall.
As with the first game of the series, the Mavericks erased a multiple-goal lead only to be undone by a late powerplay goal.
The Bobcats broke the ice late in the first period when Russell Goodman walked down the left wing and fired in a shot off the pad of goalie John Faulkner.
Goodman made it 2-0 during a power play midway through the second period. He got behind the UNO defense and backhanded a shot past Faulkner who was lifted by coach Dean Blais following the goal.
Joey Martin got UNO on the board with the two teams skating four-on-four. He stole an outlet pass and fired a shot past goalie Eric Hartzell to make it 2-1.
Matt White tied the game on a power play. He scooped up the rebound of a shot by Martin and stuffed it past Hartzell for his ninth goal of the year.
But with Brock Montpetit in the box on a tripping penalty late in the third, Jeremy Langlois tipped a shot past Mike Taffe who was making his college debut in relief of Faulkner.
Taffe took the loss with seven saves while Faulkner stopped 25. Hartzell earned the win with 44 saves as UNO outshot the Bobcats, 46-35.
The Mavericks will have a bye week before returning home to host Bemidji State on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 14 and 15.
