Carli Tritz has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week for the third consecutive week and for the fifth time. The freshman guard from Sioux City, Iowa, scored in double figures in both of Creighton’s MVC road wins last week.
The rookie started the week with 10 points, four rebounds, four steals and two assists in an 81-55 win at Evansville last Thursday. She made 5-of-6 shot from the field in her first conference road game. She followed with 12 points, five rebounds and two steals in a career-high 33 minutes of action at Southern Illinois on Saturday. For the week she averaged 11 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 1.5 assists per game.
Since becoming a starter, she is averaging 11.2 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game, while shooting 62.9 percent from the field (22-35) and 75 percent from three-point range (3-4). Her 11 steals inside conference play are tied for the league lead.
With five MVC Newcomer of the Week honors already and eight weeks left in the season, Tritz is on pace to surpass Kelsey Woodard’s school and MVC record of six MVC Newcomer of the Week honor which she captured in 2007-08.
Creighton (9-5, 3-0 MVC) is the only remaining unbeaten team in conference play, but the Jays face a tough test when they play host to Northern Iowa (10-5, 3-1 MVC) Thursday night at D.J. Sokol Arena.
