It is quite unusual to see this much activity in January at the Douglas County Election Commissioner’s office.
“To come right off other holidays and jump right in to an election is quite strange for us but we will be ready to go.”
Commissioner Dave Phipps says they are getting ready for the Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle recall election on January 25th. Phipps tells us he can’t even give a guess when it comes to voter turnout.
“Any other election I can tell you with a fair amount of certainty that we will have about this many people who will vote. With this election, I really have no base to compare it to.”
Phipps says there are a number of factors to consider.
“I just don’t have a good feel for what type of turn out we are thinking about. How many people will vote early. How will the weather play into that so it is a completely different experience.”
Only residents of Omaha can vote in the recall election. Those wanting to register to vote can do so until Friday by mail and at city libraries. Registration is still open through January 14 but it must be done in person at the election commissioner’s office.
