On Friday, Nebraska’s Board of will be asked to approve a $20 million project to renovate the Devaney Sports Center, converting the Huskers’ home for basketball since 1976 into the full-time home for volleyball beginning with the 2014 season. The plans call for the arena to be downsized with seating for 6,000 to 9,000 fans. Volleyball plays in the NU Coliseum, which holds around 4,000 and has been sold out for every match since 2001. To pay for the project, the athletic department is seeking private donations through its “Expand their Experience” fundraising program.
Football coach Bo Pelini is ready to offer a scholarship to a kicker as he looks for someone to replace Alex Henery. The Huskers are focusing on a kid from Boca Raton, FL. Named Mauro Bondi. There is video of him on the internet hitting kickoffs through the end zone and hitting field goals of more than 60 yards. Bondi commited to Wake Forest over the weekend, but Pelini has made a last minute push. According to Rivals.com, Bondi is considering a trip to Lincoln. National Signing Day is a week away.
College football conferences get a record $170 million from this season’s Bowl Championship Series games. The six college football conferences that get automatic bids took in $145 million. The Big Ten, SEC and Pac will get $27.2 million each. The Big 12, ACC and Big East get just over $21 million.
