Steve Johnsen, the executive director of the Nebraska Coaches Association, is retiring after 26 years on the job. He helped saved the organization from near bankruptcy and has seen the NCA grow from 1,500 coaches to almost triple that. Johnsen is also the PA announcer for NU volleyball games and will continue those duties.
The NCA is composed of high school and middle school coaches, college coaches and coaches from the ranks of the Special Olympics. During Johnsen’s tenure, the organization has developed the statewide Sportsmanship Summit, sportsmanship awards at the state basketball and soccer tournaments, and a student-athlete scholarship program. Johnson was instrumental in adding a softball doubleheader to the group’s all-star lineup of boys and girls basketball and volleyball events.
The NCA hosts an annual coaches’ clinic in Lincoln that features more than 65 speakers.
