Freshman Carli Tritz of the Creighton women’s basketball team has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week for a record-setting seventh time this season. The guard tied for the team-lead in scoring last week, averaging 14 points per game in road contests at league-leading Northern Iowa and Bradley.
Tritz opened the week by scoring a game-high 18 points at first-place UNI in a 60-52 loss on Thursday. The rookie kept the Bluejays in the game in the second half, as she scored Creighton’s first six field goals after halftime and accounted for 16 of the Jays’ first 19 points in the second half. The Sioux City, Iowa, native enjoyed her first collegiate game in her home state by leading all players with 18 points, hitting 7-of-15 shots from the field, while making all four of her free throw attempts.
She followed her 18-point performance with a solid all-around game at Bradley, finishing with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, a steal and a blocked shot in the 72-50 win over the Braves on Saturday.
For the week she averaged 14 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game, while shooting 52.4 percent (11-21) from the field and 85.7 percent (6-7) at the free throw line.
Tritz has now been named the MVC Newcomer of the Week seven times during her rookie season, surpassing the former league record of six honors formerly owned by teammate Kelsey Woodard (2007-08). Tritz and fellow freshman Sarah Nelson account for nine of the 14 weekly honors given out by the MVC office this year.
Creighton (16-8, 10-3 MVC), which remains alone in second place in the MVC, plays its final two home games of the regular-season this week. The Bluejays host Indiana State Thursday at 7:05 pm, and welcome third-place Illinois State to Omaha for Senior Day and the annual pink out game on Saturday at 2:05 pm.
