The communities of Omaha and Lincoln are mourning the accidental death of 31 year old Jon Peters. The Lincoln man was attending Metropolitan Community College in Omaha and in a training program to become a utility line worker. Peters was taking part in a training exercise last Saturday when he fell 27 feet from a utility pole. Mark Sundermeier is the Deputy Chief for the Metropolitan Community College Police Department and says others rushed to help when Peters indicated he was in trouble.
“He indicated he was having problems. Students and faculty were coming to his aid but he was unable to hang on. He said he was unable to hang on and he fell.”
Sundermeier says Peters was at a training facility at 104th and State Streets in Omaha.
“Its a mock up of full size utility poles that are about 32 feet high but they do not have live electricity going through them and the students work as though they would work in the field.”
Sundermeier says Peters was completing a mock training and had climbed a utility pole.
“In this case he was doing an exercise that involved moving the tension from a designated wire that runs between the poles.”
Sundermeier says Peters had almost completed a two year training course for utility line workers.
