An Omaha woman accused of killing her son and leaving his body in a bathtub in their home for several weeks has pleaded no contest to second degree murder. Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine (Kline) says a plea deal for Angela Manns was offered Tuesday.
“The public defenders asked us if we would be willing to accept a plea and they offered to plead guilty to second degree murder.”
Kleine says they talked to family members before accepting the plea deal.
“We spoke to them yesterday afternoon and that was something they felt that was appropriate. They were pleased this case would come to an end in that manner and the time she would be facing.”
Kleine says the plea comes a week before the trial was supposed to begin. He says they were ready to take the case into a courtroom.
“Yes, we were surprised. We were ready to go to trial. We had doctors lined up. We had people flying in from around the country but that’s the nature of the way this business works at times.”
Manns killed her 12 year old son Michael Belitz in 2009. The boy had been strangled with a telephone cord. She then placed his body in the bathtub covered with cat litter and garbage bags. When police were called to the home after neighbors complained about the amount of flies circling the home and others had called because they had not seen Michael in several days. Police found boning knives and other cutlery inside the bathroom.
Manns will be sentenced April 28th and faces 20 years to life in prison.
