Senators are deciding now is the time to make a 20 year commitment to roads. A bill from Senator Deb Fischer of Valentine moving forward on first round debate would divert a portion of the sales tax into a roads fund. Senator Jeremy Nordquist of Omaha says this is a bill that the state cannot afford.
“We are talking about a $2.5 Billion earmark that we don’t have the revenue for that we are putting off for two years and it’s starting to feel like DC when the introducer of the bill says I’m not willing to compromise any further.”
It’s expected the proposal would bring in $125 million for roads every year for the next 20 years.
