Gage County Sheriff and Nebraska State Patrol officers arrested a Gage County man following a pursuit Sunday afternoon. The incident began at 4:45 PM with a disturbance at a home along East Elm Road, about two miles southeast of Pickrell. Sheriff Millard Gustafson says investigators found that Andrew Bender had left a residence at that location in a maroon Chevrolet Blazer, with a handgun in his possession. Gustafson says a pursuit started and lasted about three miles when a state patrol trooper took the lead in the chase, and eventually performed a pit maneuver to spin out the suspect’s vehicle. The chase ended about three miles northwest of Filley, before the suspect could reach a home occupied by family members. The handgun recovered was a .357 caliber weapon. Bender was taken to Beatrice Community Hospital and checked for minor cuts and bruises, and then turned over to authorities. He was arrested on suspicion of obstructing a police officer and flight to avoid arrest. The state trooper involved in the pursuit was not injured.
