A bill advancing on first round in the legislature would allow 18 year olds to be examined by a doctor is they were involved in a sexual assault or domestic abuse situation. Omaha Senator Steve Lathrop of Omaha brought the bill and says these college freshman would be able to get help without parental consent.
“And it’s one of these things that they didn’t do that their parents might object to or have a problem with, instead of going to a hospital to get care and treatment where they need their parents consent for treatment, they don’t do anything.”
Lathrop says many times the girls feel as if the abuse was their fault and are too afraid to tell their parents. He says that leads to them letting the incident pass without seeking help.
