A decision from the U.S. Supreme Court that allows the state of Kansas to reopen a lawsuit against the state of Nebraska is getting a response from Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning. Bruning says thanks to the farmers in the Republican River Basin the state has the management tools in place to be in compliance with the Republican River compact between Kansas and Nebraska.
The United States Supreme Court made a decision yesterday that Kansas can file a petition over the state’s claims that in 2005 and 2006, Nebraska used more water from the river than they were allowed to. The states had reached an agreement about water usage in 1998, but Kansas officials say that agreement has been violated. Complaints about the alleged over use of water from the Republican River started back in the 1990’s.
