Amy Baker of the Creighton softball team has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week for the second time this season, following a week in which she hit a home run in five of her six games. Baker has now homered 12 times in her last 12 games and leads the MVC with 13 home runs on the season.
Baker hit .429 last week, going 9-for-21 in Creighton’s six games. The sophomore catcher hit five home runs and collected nine RBI, while slugging 1.143 during the week.
She opened the week by hitting a solo home run at 13th-ranked Nebraska on Wednesday and followed the next day with a solo shot at Iowa State.
The Omaha Westside product continued her hot hitting when the Bluejays opened their home schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Bradley on Saturday. In the Jays’ first game at home this year, Baker went 2-for-4 with three RBI and followed with a 2-for-3 game with three RBI in the night cap, homering in both games of the twin bill. On Sunday she went 3-for-3 with another solo home run to finish the Bradley series 7-for-10 with three home runs and seven RBI. During the weekend, she raised her average 54 points and is now hitting .301 on the season.
In addition to her league-leading 13 home runs, she also leads the MVC with a .771 slugging percentage and is tied for the league-lead with 25 RBI. Her 13 homers already are tied for fourth in single-season school history and through just 88 career games, she has hit 28 career home runs. As a sophomore, her 28 long balls already rank sixth in school history. Baker is hitting .436 (17-39) with 12 home runs and 22 RBI in her last 12 games, and is hitting .529 with four home runs and nine RBI through six MVC games. She has now been named MVC Player of the Week four times in her two years.
Creighton (14-16, 4-2 MVC) returns to action for a three-game series at Missouri State (13-14, 4-4 MVC) this weekend.
