The UNO baseball team shut out Nebraska-Kearney in a midweek non-conference matchup, defeating the Lopers 5-0 at the Ballpark at Boys Town on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Mavericks improve to 19-6 (15-5 MIAA), while nationally-ranked UNK drops to 19-7 (15-3 RMAC) on the year.
Sophomore Matt Tew (2-0) earned the win, surrendering just two hits with a pair of strikeouts over 2.2 innings of work. UNK’s Andre O’Connor took the loss, giving up four runs – two earned – on four hits. O’Connor fanned three batters with three walks over three innings. As a staff, the seven Maverick pitchers held Kearney to six hits on the day.
Freshman Caleb Palensky finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. Palensky hit his second home run of the year to put the Mavs on the board early.
