Jared King’s eighth inning solo home run broke a 2-2 tie game and led Kansas State to a 3-2 win over Nebraska on Sunday afternoon at Hawks Field.
Nebraska scored both runs in the fourth inning when it had three of its seven hits in the game to take a 2-0 lead. Left fielder Kale Kiser, led off the inning with a single to left field. After he was sacrificed to second by Bryan Peters, Cody Asche delivered an RBI single to left center to score Kiser. Asche then advanced to second on a groundout by Kash Kalkowski and was driven in by Kurt Farmer’s RBI single up the middle to make it 2-0.
Kansas State responded with runs off Nebraska starter Jon Keller in the fifth and sixth innings. Keller went 5.1 innings and gave up two runs on six hits. Kansas State starter Matt Applegate went 6.1 innings before James Allen (2-1) held the Huskers scoreless the rest of the way to pick up the win. The loss was dealt to Dylan Vogt (2-1).
The Huskers edged the Wildcats in the series opener by the same 3-2 final to set up Monday’s rubber match at 1:05 p.m.
