Maps of redrawn Nebraska legislative districts are circulating among lawmakers in Lincoln as the debate begins. Senator Tyson Larson of O’Neill says his District 40, like most rural districts, will see some major changes.
The district will continue to have Rock, Holt, Boyd, Cedar, Knox and Dixon counties under the still-unofficial plan, while it would lose Pierce County.
“It’s hard when rural Nebraska is going to lose a senator,” Larson says. “Nobody wants that but unfortunately, that’s just the way that it goes.”
Larson predicts there will be disputes over the proposed boundary lines.
“There will be a looming battle on the floor, I’m sure, concerning these maps and they’re by no means what will happen,” Larson says. “These are the base maps.”
He says every effort is being made to redraw the maps fairly, based on 2010 Census data that shows shifts in the state’s population. He says they’re also working to see that no counties are split into two districts.
