The Missouri River Relief is asking for volunteers in Omaha and Council Bluffs to get down into the river and get a bit dirty this Saturday. Spokesman Jeff Barrow says they have 10 boats ready to take volunteers up and down the river to pick up trash.
“We will be taking volunteers out to the woods and the shores where the volunteers will be picking up the trash and putting it in bags, the big stuff that piles up on shores.”
Barrow says the more the merrier and the more work that will get done. He says these volunteers usually don’t fool around and are there to get a job done.
“A typical cleanup will take 150 volunteers out in the river and in 3 hours they will have collected 10-tons of garbage.”
Barrow says you would not believe what people dump along the river.
“We find everything from kitchen sinks, refrigerators, water heaters to upright pianos. It is amazing what’s out there.”
Volunteers should meet at the Lewis and Clark Marina at 9am Saturday. Barrow says dress appropriately and that means long sleeves and pants and sturdy shoes.
