A.J. Ellis’ two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning was apart of an Albuquerque three-run inning as the Isotopes beat Omaha 5-3 in the opener of a four-game set at Isotopes Park.
Eric Hosmer went 3-for-4 with a walk in the loss to extend his hitting streak to six games and lift his batting average to .422. Johnny Giavotella’s first inning sacrifice fly and Lucas May’s run-scoring double in the second inning gave the Storm Chasers an early 2-0 lead against John Ely.
Omaha starter Kevin Pucetas gave up one run on four hits over six innings and left with a 2-1 lead. His earned run average is 1.96. Blaine Hardy gave up a leadoff homer to J.D. Closser in the seventh that tied the game. Steven Shell took the loss following a one-out intentional walk to Closser and a wild pitch that advanced runners ahead of Ellis’ hit.
David Lough’s two-out RBI double in the ninth trimmed the Omaha deficit to 5-3 before Merkin Valdez got Hosmer to ground out to end the game. Lough pushed his hitting to streak to seven games.
