A two-vehicle accident west of Adams has killed the 17-year-old driver of one of the vehicles involved in an accident where her 15-year-old sister was the driver of the other vehicle.
Gage County Sheriff Millard “Gus” Gustafson identifies the victim as Gabrielle Matthes of Adams. Law officers responded to the accident at about 6:30 Monday, at South 110th and Birch Roads.
A red Pontiac G-Six driven by Gabrielle Matthes was eastbound on Birch Road when it met a westbound 2003 Chevrolet pickup driven by her sister, Megan Matthes. The vehicles collided head-on at the crest of a hill.
Gustafson says Gabrielle Matthes was pinned in the car. She was extricated and flown by medical helicopter to Bryan L-G-H West Medical Center in Lincoln. Gabrielle died later, at the hospital. Authorities say she was not wearing a seatbelt and the car’s airbag deployed.
Megan Matthes and a passenger in her pickup, 16 year old Katlyn Beu of Adams, were taken to Bryan L-G-H for treatment of injuries. Authorities say Megan was wearing a seatbelt and both airbags deployed in the pickup. The accident happened less than a mile from the Matthes home.
Gustafson says Gabrielle Matthes was soon to graduate from Freeman Public Schools.
In addition to sheriff’s officers, the Nebraska State Patrol, Adams Fire, Adams Rescue, Cortland and Clatonia rescue units and Lincoln A-L-S responded to the scene.
