The pilot of a gyro-copter was killed when the aircraft hit a telephone line and crashed, in Blue Springs Tuesday afternoon.
Gage County Sheriff Millard “Gus” Gustafson says the pilot was identified as 68-year-old Ernest Norris of Blue Springs. Investigators and witnesses say the single seat gyro helicopter was attempting to take off when it failed to reach enough altitude and Norris lost control of the aircraft.
The copter then hit the phone line and crashed onto Walnut Street, bursting into flames. Witnesses pulled the pilot from the burning wreckage. The accident happened near the intersection of Walnut Street and U-S Highway 77. Norris was taken by medical helicopter to Bryan LGH West Medical Center in Lincoln, where he died shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The Federal Aviation Administration has requested an autopsy be completed. The accident happened at about 1:30 pm, sending Beatrice, Wymore and Blue Springs fire and rescue personnel to the scene.
