The Bellevue University (31-20) baseball team scored three runs in the seventh inning to complete a 4-3 back-from-behind victory against top-seeded York College (39-14) in the championship game of the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament at Levitt Stadium.
The Bruins earn the automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round, May 12-15.
York opened the scoring with a run in each of the first three innings. The Panthers scored their first run on a two-out RBI single in the first by starting pitcher Brett Nathan, before Gene Felise blasted a solo home run to center field in the second inning. YC scored its final run of the game on a RBI single by Nick Nguyen in the third.
The Bruins scored their first run of the game in the top of the sixth on a RBI single by Tylor Pavel (Boise, Idaho) that allowed Anthony Bazant (LaVista, Neb.) to score from second base.
BU took the lead in the seventh inning scoring three runs on two hits and capitalized on two errors by YC. Kelvin Nelson (Waseca, Minn.) scored on a balk for the first run of the inning. A steal by Bazant allowed Junior Martinez (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico) to score from third on the throw. BU took the lead on a RBI single by Francisco Rosario (Aibonito, Puerto Rico) which proved to be the game-winning hit.
Mike Andrick (San Francisco, Calif.) earned the win and improved to 8-4 this season. The senior from San Francisco, Calif., pitched eight innings and allowed just four hits with eight strikeouts. After allowing a lead-off double, Sean Mattson (Scarborough, Ontario) retired the next three batters to pick up his first save of the season. Relief pitcher Bruce Amende took the loss for the Panthers, falling to 8-4 this year.
