A ceremony was held Monday at the Nebraska Law Enforcement Memorial in Grand Island, honoring the 132 law officers in the state who have died or been killed in the line of duty. A large American flag was the backdrop as family, friends, fellow law officers and the public gathered at the memorial. The curved granite panels bear the names of all Nebraska officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. One name has been added, that of Deputy U.S. Marshal Emil Wehrli. He died in 1988 from a heart attack suffered during a mandatory physical fitness test. The dedication ceremony was held in advance of National Police Week which is next week.
