The Nebraska Child Support Payment Center is offering seminars for employers to learn about the changes in laws and practices relating to the withholding of court ordered child support payments for employees. Director of Employer Outreach for the Nebraska Child Support Center Tom Hinds tells us one of the issues that will be covered is the use of electronic payments by employers.
“We travel all over the state and we are trying to promote, our number one reason is to promote the use of electronic payments on their employees child support. The seminars are geared to human resource and payment people for all these businesses. We send out invitations and flyers to thousands and thousands of businesses across the state. The main reason why we are doing this is to try to convert them to electronic payments so they will spend less money and we will spend less money saving the taxpayers some money on that. It is three times more expensive to process a paper payment than to process an electronic payment.”
Hinds say they will also cover new rules and regulations.
“It is kind of like child support A to Z. We cover reporting new hires which is a federal law now. What is included with that. We talk about medical support notices that come out, we cover that. We also talk about income withholding. Different ways that you can receipt the money to us and also what we need information-wise so we know the person is dispersed to the custodial parent. There are also many questions on these topics we answer for them.”
Hinds says this is the seventh year for the program.
“We’ve tried to log the mileage we’ve put on and it is close to 20-thousand miles in the last six years. In perspective, that is like driving to Omaha to Scottsbluff 41 times so we put on a lot of miles. We do about 19 to 20 of these seminars every year and we send out fliers to all the employers we know of in these towns and around these towns.”
The seminars are free and will be offered through October. Seminars offered in May include:
Alliance on May 11th.
Ogallala on May 12th.
Hastings on May 13th.
Several other locations where seminars are scheduled include South Sioux City, Norfolk, Sidney, North Platte, Gering, Grand Island, Chadron and Valentine.
