A fast-moving thunderstorm caused an accident involving a semi on I-80 west of Ogallala this morning. According to Ogallala Fire Chief Greg Stofer, a FedEx semi pulling a double trailer hit a patch of hail on Interstate 80 just west of Ogallala around 8:30am Mountain Time on Wednesday. The driver lost control of the big rig, clipped a car, and eventually came to a rest on its side.
Rescue personnel transported the driver of the semi to the Ogallala Community Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. No one in the car was injured. Stofer is not releasing any details about the semi driver.
The abnormal morning spring thunderstorm traveled through southwestern Nebraska in an odd northwesterly direction bringing with it lots of moisture and reports of hail from Hayes Center to Ogallala. Stofer says there may have been up to two inches of pea to quarter-sized hail on the interstate at the time of the accident.
