MIAA Freshman of the Year Caleb Palensky went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and five Washburn errors bolstered Nebraska Omaha to an 11-1 victory over the Ichabods in eight innings Thursday afternoon at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
Joe Holtmeyer and Zach Croonquist combined to give up just one run on four hits for the Mavericks (33-18), striking out 10 Washburn batters in the process. Holtmeyer got the win, improving the All-MIAA FirstTeam selection to 8-2 on the season.
Blake Boling had the lone RBI for Washburn (22-28), a sacrifice fly in the top of the third inning that scored Travis Cruz and made the score 1-1 at the time.
From there, Nebraska Omaha answered with two runs in the bottom of the third to regain the lead, and four runs off three hits aided by three WU errors in the bottom of the sixth put the game out of reach.
With the win, Nebraska Omaha moves on to face Emporia State Friday at 3 p.m. to begin the four-team, double elimination portion of the MIAA Tournament. In Friday’s first game, No. 1 seed Central Missouri will face off with No. 5 seed Missouri Western at 11 a.m.
