An Omaha mother who killed her son and left his decomposing body in a bathtub covered with garbage bags and cat litter is sentenced to 34 to 35 years in prison. Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine thought Angela Manns’ sentence would have been more severe.
“The sentence could be life in prison for second degree murder for the intentional killing of a 12 year old it seems like it was on the low end. I guess that is disappointing.”
Kleine says the sentence was too lenient.
“We thought it would be something on the higher end. It is a difficult decision but it was the murder of a 12 year old, that wasn’t as high of a sentence we anticipated by the court.”
Bev White’s son was the best friend of the victim, Michael Belitz.
“I’m glad she got what she got. Too bad she didn’t get life but we can’t do that. We’re not the judgers. We’re good. We’re happy. It is over. Now we can rest.”
Manns could be eligible for parole in 17 years. Prosecutors say two years ago Belitz was strangled with a telephone cord and his wrists and legs were bound with duct tape. In the bathroom, police say there were a number of boning knives and other cutlery. Neighbors had called the police when they hadn’t seen the boy and because there was a strong stench coming from the house.
