The Lincoln Saltdogs committed three errors and stranded 12 runners as they dropped the series opener to the Wichita Wingnuts 4-2 in 10 innings in front of 2,340 fans at Haymarket Park Friday night.
Jorge Cortes launched a two-out, two-run home run to right center to give the Wingnuts a 4-2 advantage in the top of the 10th inning before Wichita closerJosh Dew retired the side in order to earn his sixth save of the season.
Tommy Palica pitched six strong innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits, striking out five in his first start of the season.
Nick Schreiber, Garrett Sherrill and Paul Koss combined to toss four innings without allowing an earned run in relief.
The Saltdogs left the bases loaded in the seventh and ninth innings, and stranded 12 runners in total.
Cephus Howard (2-1) pitched 2/3 of an inning in relief to earn the win. Koss (0-1) allowed two unearned runs in the 10th inning to take the loss.
Blake Gailen, Curt Smith and Vance Albitz each collected two hits in the losing effort.
The teams meet for game two of the series Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Tim Brown (0-2, 8.10) is expected to start for Lincoln against Ryan Hinson (2-0, 1.50) for Wichita.
