Luis Mendoza went seven strong innings in a spot start as Omaha defeated Iowa, 3-1, Monday night in the third of a four-game set at Principal Park. The Storm Chasers improved to 32-26 on the season and now lead Memphis by 4 1/2 games and the Cubs by five in the American Conference North Division.
Mendoza was pressed into action when Vin Mazzaro was scratched after being promoted to start for the Royals on Tuesday. He kept the Cubs scoreless through six innings. In the 7th, Wellington Castillo reached on a leadoff double that was lost in the twilight and scored to trim the margin to 2-1 on a two-out double by Ty Wright.
Kila Ka’aihue’s leadoff long ball in the eighth, his second home run in as many days, increased the lead to 3-1, which was more than enough room for Jeremy Jeffress to close out the Cubs.
