Blake Gailen hit another late-inning home run but it wasn’t enough as the Winnipeg Goldeyes held off the Saltdogs 6-2 in front of 3,110 fans at Haymarket Park Tuesday night.
The ‘Dogs were limited to just two hits over the first seven innings by Winnipeg starter Luis Villarreal and reliever William Jackel.
Gailen’s opposite field, two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth, his fifth of the season, cut the score to 5-2. Lincoln would later put two men on base with the potential tying run at the plate but closer Jamie Vermilyea struck out Robby Alcombrack to end the threat.
Villarreal (1-0) pitched five innings, allowing no runs on two hits to earn the win. Tim Brown tossed 6 2/3 innings, surrendering three earned on six hits while striking out and walking two to suffer the loss. Vermilyea converted the four-out save, his fourth of the season.
