Massive snowpack in the mountains that is yet to melt and heavy rain in Montana earlier this year are the blame for flood situation along the Missouri River. On June 14th, the Corps will release 150-thousand cubic feet of water per minute from the Gavins Point Dam making the flood situation worse in Nebraska. Senator Ben Nelson met earlier with the U-S Army Corps of Engineers and he says this decision was made on the homework the Corps had in front of them at the time. Senator Nelson stated modeling based on prior experience is what they had to go on.
The next question is whether Senator Nelson will call a congressional hearing regarding the Corps actions. He stated there is a possibility of that but he would like to wait and read the Corps report assessment. If this isn’t satisfactory, more insight may be needed.
Senator Nelson says right now the Corps has their hands full and this is not the right time for a hearing. he says it would not be a good idea to tie them up with hearings when they are managing the river flows and is not sure it is warranted at this time.
Senator Nelson says a decision will be made after they review the Corps report.
