Scammers are striking the heartland trying to take advantage of those who may be impacted by the impending flood along the Missouri River. Across the river from Omaha, Council Bluffs Fire Chief Alan Byers says someone is posing as a city official and knocking on doors telling people they must evacuate immediately. The thieves offered to help some of the elderly victims pack their belongings. Officials suspect they were hoping to get the homeowners out of the house and come back later and take their belongings.
Fortunately, no one fell for the scam.
Byers said 11 people in the same neighborhood called 911 questioning the need to evacuate. Police could not find the suspect and Byers promises they will prosecute to the fullest when they find him.
He is also asking neighbors to keep an eye on each others property and each other.
