The stagnant flood water along the Missouri River is causing a large mosquito population. Douglas County Health Department Director Dr. Adi Pour says if there is any good news during this tragedy is variety of mosquito in the area does not carry West Nile virus. Dr. Pour says that variety likes hot weather and will not likely show up until August.
As a precaution, Dr. Pour says it is a good idea to use products to repel mosquitoes. She recommends insecticides that contain DEET. She says oil of eucalyptus is also a good alternative. Mosquitoes are more active in the early evening hours so extra precaution should be taken at that time. Wearing long sleeve shirts and long pants are also advised.
