Sophomore quarterback Taylor Martinez was selected for the Maxwell Award Watch list, the award that goes to the nation’s top player. Martinez was a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award in 2010 and nearly became the third freshman in NCAA history to rush and pass for 1,000 yards in a season. On the year, he threw for 1,631 and 10 touchdowns, while rushing for 950 yards and 12 scores on the ground. Martinez is one of 10 Big Ten players chosen for the 2011 watch list.
While Martinez was NU’s lone Maxwell Award watch list member, the Blackshirts were well represented on the Bednarik Award’s watch list for the nation’s most outstanding defensive player. Defensive tackle Jared Crick, linebacker Lavonte David and cornerback Alfonzo Dennard were all added for the watch list, as Nebraska accounted for three of the Big Ten’s seven spots on the list.
