Nebraska-Kearney’s John Steinke of Grand Island defeated former Nebraska-Omaha No. 1 player Drew Mercier 6-4, 6-1 in the men’s open singles final at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The unseeded Steinke beat No. 1 seed Eric McKnight of Omaha (a current UNO player) 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals, then downed Lincoln Racquet Club pro and No. 3 seed Rick Stempson 6-0, 6-4 in the semifinals.
Carol Frost, a one time Husker women’s track and field coach won the javelin, shot put and discus on Saturday even broke her own record in the 65-69 year old age group for discus which was her event when she made the U.S. Olympic team in 1968 in Mexico City.
