Nebraska seniors Madeleine Sheils and Kayla Knopik closed the opening round of the Hooters Team Championship presented by the National Golf Coaches Association in a tie for 23rd in Dahlonega, Ga., on Tuesday.
Sheils (Boise, Idaho) and Knopik (Papillion, Neb.) produced a four-over-par 76 in Tuesday’s alternate-shot format in the three-day event. The Husker duo sits eight strokes back of Kentucky’s tandem of Liz Breed and Heather Lott and Michigan State’s Caroline Powers and Lindsey Solberg. The Wildcats and Spartans each teamed up to shoot four-under-par 68s on Tuesday.
Sheils and Knopik are competing in a 55-team field on the 6,155-yard, par-72 layout of Achasta, by Reynolds. The preseason, non-collegiate tournament continues on Wednesday with a shift to a best-ball format. The 54-hole event concludes with an aggregate score round on Thursday.
