Cheryl Kastanek, secretary of the Nebraska Czechs of Wilber, says there will be plenty of traditional food, entertainment and several parades.
Kastanek says they’re looking back to their roots: “There were four gentlemen that started the Czech Festival and started the Nebraska Czechs of Wilber,” she says. “Let’s honor those Czechs. Let’s not let the culture die.”
One feature this year is an appearance by the famous horse team, the Budweiser Clydesdales. She says the fest is put on with the help of about a thousand volunteers.
The celebration includes a children’s parade at 7 P-M tonight and parades at 2 P-M on both Saturday and Sunday. This is the 25th year for the Czech Queen competition, now a national pageant that involves participants from several states.
As for those tasty pastries, some 65,000 kolaches are being baked for this year’s event.
