A soldier from eastern Nebraska is confirmed among the dead in the weekend military helicopter crash in Afghanistan.
The Nebraska National Guard says 30-year-old Sergeant Patrick Hamburger was one of the 30 Americans and eight Afghans killed on Saturday.
Officials say the U-S Chinook helicopter was knocked down by a rocket-propelled grenede, launched from insurgents on the ground.
Hamburger was a native of Lincoln and had been living in Grand Island.
He leaves behind a fiance and a two-year-old daughter. Hamburger enlisted in the National Guard when he was still a senior at Lincoln Southeast High School.
It was his first deployment. He’d been in Afghanistan less than two weeks.
