Senior forward Ethan Finlay and sophomore defender Tyler Polak of the Creighton men’s soccer team have both been named preseason All-Americans by CollegeSoccerNews.com. Finlay, a National Player of the Year semifinalist last year, was tabbed to the first team, while Polak, a Freshman All-American a year ago, was named to the third team.
Finlay, the 2010 Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, led the team and conference with 15 goals and 34 points last year. Those numbers both ranked in the top-10 nationally, while the Marshfield, Wis., native also earned second-team All-America honors from the NSCAA, CollegeSoccerNews.com and Goal.com last year. He begins his senior season tied for sixth in school history with 29 goals, while his 16 goals and 40 points at Morrison Stadium are facility records.
Polak, the 2010 MVC Freshman of the Year, played more minutes than any other Bluejay field player in his rookie season and was a dominating defender. The sophomore from Lincoln, Neb., was a first-team all-region selection and second-team all-conference pick in 2010. He helped the Bluejays post eight clean sheets and post a 1.06 goals against average, while he scored two goals and added an assist from his left back slot.
The Bluejays start the 2011 season with a Blue-White Scrimmage, which is free to the public, on Sunday, Aug. 14 at 5 pm. The Jays play 2010 NCAA Champion Akron in their first exhibition match on Saturday, Aug. 20 in Fort Wayne, Ind.
