Saturday night, the Kearney Little League will face the Harney Little League of Rapid City, S.D., trying to become the first Nebraska team to reach the Little League World Series at Williamsport, PA.
The players know what’s on the line. Kearney coach Mike Koski told Kearney Hub.com, “The kids know a lot about this stuff. They’re pretty excited about it.”
Kearney met Harney earlier in the qualifying rounds of the Midwest Regional and lost 3-2. Harney beat Webb City on Thursday in the semifinal and the Missouri coach said he’s be surprised if the team from Rapid City didn’t win it all.
The key for Kearney will be to ride their strong pitching and defense. After losing their first two games, they’ve rallied to win three straight to get to the championship. Kearney has allowed just two runs in the last three wins including a no-hitter by Cam Moore against Webb City. The team has an ERA of 1.45 and a fielding percentage of .941, which is amazing for any age group. Harney meanwhile hits .393 as a team, while Kearney is sitting at .227 as a group.
Kearney plays at 6 p.m. in the Midwest Regional championship in Indianapolis, on ESPN.
