Missouri Valley Conference men’s soccer coaches have selected Creighton as the preseason favorite to defend its 2010 MVC title as the 2011 preseason poll and preseason all-MVC team were announced by the league office Tuesday morning. Creighton garnered six of the seven first-place votes and six Bluejays were voted to the preseason all-conference team.
The Bluejays totalled 48 of the possible 49 points in the poll, as the clear cut favorite in the MVC in 2011. In 2010, Creighton finished with a 13-5-2 record, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Jays captured their record 10th MVC regular-season title with a 5-1-1 Valley mark a year ago. Creighton has been ranked in the top-10 of three national polls already released, including 10th in the coaches poll.
Slated for a second-place finish is the defending MVC Tournament champion Bradley. The Braves’ 34 points narrowly edged Missouri State’s 33 points in the poll, as the Bears received the other remaining first-place vote.
Drake (30) and SIU Edwardsville (26) were picked to finish fourth and fifth respectively, while Evansville (15) and Central Arkansas (10) round out the poll. Of note, MVC men’s soccer is now a seven-team league, as Eastern Illinois has ended its men’s soccer affiliation with the MVC.
