Two weekends away from the start of another season of Nebraska football. As we lead up to the season opener we have plenty to cover the next two weeks, starting with the AP poll that came out over the weekend, where the Huskers come in at number 10, one spot ahead of Wisconsin. In the coaches poll that came out a couple of weeks ago, the Badgers were one spot ahead of NU. That says a lot that the Huskers figure to be in the running for a Big Ten championship in their first year.
I also got the latest edition of Sports Illustrated mailed to me and on the cover is defensive tackle Brandon Crick. SI picks Nebraska at 9, two spots ahead of Wisconsin. A good article on Crick and his roommate Marcel Jones and the article is very complimentary of Carl Pelini’s defense and how it could give fits to offenses in the Big Ten. It will certainly be an adjustment for the Blackshirts going from the pass happy spread attack of the Big 12 to a more traditional type offensive look in the Big Ten.
As far as the Huskers offense is concerned, offensive coordinator Tim Beck running a more uptempo offense, Bo Pelini thinks Martinez has a better handle of the offense. So while NU may have the best defense in the Big Ten, improvement on offense will be the key for a team that only scored more than 20 points once in their last five games.
