The driver of a car that burst into flames after rear-ending a pickup this morning at Highway 50 and I-80 in Sarpy County has died of injuries suffered in that accident. He has been identified as 29-year-old Andrew Shutters of Council Bluffs. He was transferred by air-lift helicopter to Creighton University Medical Center where he later died.
The driver of the pickup, 49 year old Ivan Cunningham, was also transported to Creighton University Medical Center with minor injuries.
Sarpy County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Russ Zeeb says this accident happened about 45 minutes after a semi driver lost control and hit another semi before rolling. The first truck driver was taken to a hospital in critical condition but will survive. A passenger in the sleeper suffered minor injuries. The other semi driver was not hurt.
Back-to-back accidents this morning in Sarpy County brought Interstate-80 traffic to a crawl and sent several people to hospitals, one with life threatening injuries. Sarpy County Sheriff’s Lt. Russ Zeeb says the first accident involved two semis. One driver lost control and hit another semi and rolled off I-80 east of Highway 50. Neither driver was seriously injured.
Law enforcement were cleaning up that accident and almost had I-80 cleared when another driver rear-ended a pickup that was stopped in the congestion. That accident happened near Sapp Brothers Truck Stop near Highway 50.
Lt. Zeeb says the driver of the car that rear-ended the pickup was air-lifted to a hospital with life threatening injuries. The pickup driver was not seriously hurt.
The back-to-back accidents both happened in the eastbound lanes and brought traffic to a crawl for a good part of Thursday morning.
