An Amtrak train with about 178 people on board struck an agricultural vehicle near the Nebraska-Kansas border and derailed, injuring a few of the passengers.
Amtrak reports the derailment occurred shortly before nine o’clock this morning near Benkelman, Nebraska on the BNSF Railway tracks. No life-threatening injuries have been reported. Amtrak says a small number of passengers have been taken to a local hospital. Both of the train’s locomotives left the rails. Three railcars also derailed.
The California Zephyr was traveling eastbound enroute to Emeryville, California to Chicago. It departed San Francisco Bay Wednesday. Passengers have been taken to a nearby high school until arrangements can be made to continue to their destination.
