18 year old Jack Sock beat the oldest player in the draw, Marc Gicquel, 6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. The 96th-ranked Frenchman is 34.
Sock lost in his Grand Slam debut at Flushing Meadows last year in four sets. He earned a wild card this year and last by winning the U.S. Tennis Association’s boys under-18 national championship. He captured the U.S. Open junior title in 2010, the first American to win the boys championship since Andy Roddick in 2000.
Sock’s next opponent will be Roddick, who defeated Michael Russell 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. “We’re good friends, but when we play, it will be two tennis players battling it out to get to the third round,” Sock said.
